So, you want to make the move into PR?
Good choice. It’s a thriving industry with the power to do amazing things for brands, people and the planet using creativity and influence. That’s why we like it. And we’d love to help more people be part of it.
Perhaps you’re a journalist or marketer and have experienced PR from the other side of the fence. Perhaps you’re in sales or consulting and want to flex your client management skills in a new industry. Maybe you’re just ready for something different.
However, even if you have experience in a related field, making the move to PR can be tough. The biggest challenge is, that once you are a Senior Account Executive (just one or two levels up from entry level), you’ll be managing team members that have 6 months – 1.5 years in driving media relations. They expect their line managers to be able to make edits to their press releases, advise on how to tailor their media strategy and improve their pitching skills.
If you don’t have this skill set, then it makes it difficult to make the move into PR above an entry level role.
Of course, there’s also many different sectors of the industry to consider as well. We’ll let you in on a secret – even experienced PR professionals face a challenge when changing PR sectors.
So is the dream dead? Is it practically impossible to get into PR without taking an entry-level role?
No.
The good news is, there are ways you can leverage your previous professional experience to make the move into PR. Some agencies are more open to it than others. The trick is in finding these agencies, and knowing how to sell your experience to highlight the value you have to offer.
