Why is salary transparency so important? Q&A with Kirsty Leighton | We Show the Salary

Say Hello

When it comes to job advertisements in PR and Comms, there are very few companies who choose to disclose salary information. Despite the strides made towards inclusivity in recent years, there is a lack of action in the area of salary transparency. Despite ties to pay inequality and reduced accessibility to the industry, ‘competitive’ salaries continue to dominate the majority of job ads.

But there is hope for jobseekers yet. Spearheaded by Jo Tidball, We Show the Salary is a grassroots movement calling for a radical shift towards salary transparency. In it’s first couple of months, the campaign has received incredible support from companies across all industries – noteably including some of London’s leading PR agencies. One of these agencies is Milk & Honey PR.

To help spread the word far and wide, we asked Milk & Honey’s Founder and Group CEO Kirsty Leighton a few questions on her motivation behind signing the pledge, and her advice to fellow PR agencies interested in championing salary transparency.

Why did your agency sign the We Show the Salary pledge?

We believe that it is critical to ensure potential applicants know what they are going after.

From an agency POV, what are the benefits to listing a salary in a job ad?

In our industry there are a multitude of titles and very often this can be confusing, so salary brings clarity.

Why do you think salary transparency isn’t the status-quo in the PR industry?

I’d rather hope that it is now becoming an expectation, but for some reason some organisations are coy about sharing salaries. We are transparent with banding both inside the company and outside. If someone with the same experience joins our business above someone already on the team we automatically adjust.

What’s your advice to PR leaders who are on the fence about signing up?

What are you afraid of? If you have inequalities inside, sort that out first before bringing in any new talent. Make salary transparency a principle you live by. Pay all ages, genders, races, equally for doing the same job.
