How to move from agency to in-house PR

Say Hello

June 2026

Thinking about moving from agency to in-house? It’s a common goal for many who’ve built a career in-house but are ready for a change or new challenge. The application process can feel daunting and a bit of a black hole. Here’s my advice on how to get noticed and secure an interview:

1. Don’t be put off by high applicant numbers on LinkedIn

If you see hundreds of applicants, don’t fret. Most of those people won’t have a PR background or will be coming from the wrong sectors (we know this from our own advertising!). In reality, the pool of candidates who are actually a good fit for the role is usually only 10-20 people max. You are competing with a much smaller group than the data suggests.

2. Follow up straight away with the hiring manager / recruitment lead

Recruitment inboxes are very busy. noisy. To avoid getting lost, find the hiring manager and send a personalised LinkedIn connection. If you don’t hear back, follow up a week later with your CV, portfolio, and a specific case study of a campaign you’ve run. to show exactly why you are relevant.

3. Sector experience is usually non-negotiable

PR is incredibly sector-specific, e.g. if a beauty brand is hiring, they almost always want someone from a beauty PR background. Think about how you can highlight your specific sector wins within your application, especially if your CV shows a mix of experience.
